Background of the Study
The global healthcare landscape has increasingly turned to technology to improve the quality of care, with electronic health records (EHRs) emerging as a significant advancement. EHRs offer several benefits, including improving patient care through timely and accurate data access, enhancing communication among healthcare providers, reducing medical errors, and optimizing healthcare management (Olu et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the implementation of EHRs in hospitals is a relatively recent development, and while some hospitals have adopted these systems, widespread implementation remains a challenge.
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, like many other hospitals in Nigeria, has made strides toward implementing EHRs, but the adoption rate is still suboptimal, and various barriers impede its full integration into the hospital's operations. These barriers can be categorized into infrastructural, technological, human, and policy-related challenges. Inadequate infrastructure, including poor internet connectivity and insufficient hardware, combined with limited knowledge and training among healthcare staff, often hinders the successful adoption of EHRs (Ogunleye et al., 2024). Furthermore, financial constraints, resistance to change from healthcare workers, and concerns about data security and patient confidentiality further complicate the transition from paper-based records to electronic systems.
This study aims to evaluate the barriers to adopting EHRs at FMC Katsina, identifying the key challenges faced by healthcare providers and hospital administrators. Understanding these barriers will help formulate strategies to overcome the obstacles and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery in Nigerian hospitals.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of electronic health records, many Nigerian hospitals, including FMC Katsina, face significant challenges in adopting and fully implementing EHR systems. The barriers to adoption—ranging from infrastructural issues to resistance among healthcare workers—remain inadequately understood. This study seeks to identify the specific barriers to EHR adoption at FMC Katsina and provide recommendations to enhance the implementation process.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the barriers to adopting electronic health records at FMC Katsina.
2. To evaluate the impact of infrastructural and technological limitations on the adoption of EHRs.
3. To propose strategies for overcoming the identified barriers to EHR adoption in FMC Katsina.
Research Questions
1. What are the key barriers to adopting electronic health records at FMC Katsina?
2. How do infrastructural and technological limitations affect the adoption of EHRs in the hospital?
3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome the barriers to EHR adoption at FMC Katsina?
Research Hypotheses
1. Infrastructural and technological limitations significantly hinder the adoption of EHRs at FMC Katsina.
2. Healthcare workers' resistance to change contributes to the slow adoption of EHRs at FMC Katsina.
3. Adequate training and investment in technology can significantly improve the adoption of EHRs at FMC Katsina.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the barriers to adopting EHRs at FMC Katsina, using surveys and interviews to collect data from healthcare professionals, administrators, and IT personnel. Limitations may include challenges in gathering data from all stakeholders and the difficulty of assessing the full impact of EHR adoption due to time constraints.
Definitions of Terms
• Electronic Health Records (EHRs): Digital versions of patients' medical histories, designed to be used across different healthcare settings.
• Adoption: The process of implementing and integrating new technologies, such as EHR systems, into routine healthcare practices.
• Infrastructural Limitations: The physical and technological challenges, such as unreliable internet connectivity and insufficient hardware, that hinder the implementation of EHRs.
